A physics major, Matthew (Matt) Kafker maintains an academic interest in numerous subjects, including literature, math, computer science, and foreign languages. Outside of school, Matt Kafker enjoys reading the works of authors such as Ernest Hemingway.

Despite being one of the best-known writers in history, Hemingway still has many hidden sides. Here are a few facts about the author that most people don’t know:
- He was a KGB spy.
Near the end of Hemingway’s life, he became increasingly paranoid that the FBI was spying on him. Later on, it was revealed that the FBI was tracking him because he had been recruited as a spy by the Soviet Union. However, Hemingway was a failed spy who never actually fed the Soviets any intelligence.
- He almost died multiple times.
During a vacation in Belgian Congo, Hemingway was in a plane crash. The next day in Entebbe, he was in another plane crash in which he suffered a concussion. He also survived malaria, anthrax, diabetes, and a ruptured liver before he took his own life with a gun.
- He was charged with war crimes.
A war correspondent in World War II, Hemingway was not allowed to go onto Omaha Beach after D-Day. In response, he gathered a band of resistance fighters in Rambouillet and set about gathering intelligence. However, the Geneva Convention did not allow correspondents to lead armed troops, so Hemingway was charged but ultimately cleared of war crimes.
