The Open Door provides free dinners in a friendly environment to people who are hungry. The meals are sponsored by various civic, charitable, religious, and educational organizations. They are offered every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and on Sunday between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
A lot of preparation goes into preparing the meals, readying the venue for serving, and cleaning up afterward. For example, before meals are served, the dining room is cleaned and sanitized, chairs and tables are wiped down, and tables are set with napkins, place mats, and utensils. After meals are served, any food that’s left over is carefully packed and offered to guests as takeout. After everyone has left, tables are cleared and again sanitized, the floor is swept and mopped, chairs are stacked, dishes are washed, and dirty aprons are collected in the laundry bin.
That’s a lot of work. Volunteers do a large part of it. That’s why The Open Door is always happy to welcome volunteers into its team.
