Committed to improving the lives of others, university student Matt Kafker has volunteered with organizations including the Pine Street Inn homeless shelter, Open Door Food Pantry, and Greater Boston Food Bank. Matt Kafker also has a range of academic interests including physics, math, computer science, and linguistics.
Studying linguistics opens the door to new opportunities and a chance to get valuable life skills. The following are three reasons to study linguistics:
1. Increases awareness. Linguistic analysis requires the ability to pay attention to the properties of an overall system and its details.
2. Provides variety. The study of linguistics is extremely diverse. For example, semantics classes require a philosophical approach while syntax demands a more scientific and mathematical mindset. Additionally, there are multiple areas of learning focus on while studying linguistics.
3. Transferable skills. Studying linguistics improves both written and verbal communication skills and teaches how to use language for effect. Studying linguistics also enhances analytical, presentation, and research skills, all of which are valuable to employers.
